One to one physiotherapy (Segment 3A&B)

This option is chosen primarily when balance is too poor for a client to participate safely in a group or home exercise programme. Physiotherapy intervention is carried out at the discretion of the physiotherapist. If regular input is required, a physiotherapy or healthcare/rehabilitation assistant may perform some of the exercises with the client on a one to one basis.

Other indication for one to one treatment is the need for a comprehensive assessment or treatment for other problems identified during falls assessment such as dizziness or joint pain/instability.

Criteria for referral

• Reaction times, muscle strength or postural sway impaired related to age reflected in severe/marked falls risk score on PPA or severe near tandem stand, alternate step and/or sit to stand impairment on PPA Quickscreen
• Unable to stand unsupported on the floor with eyes open for 30 seconds
• Multiple problems identified on falls specialist assessment requiring a comprehensive physiotherapy assessment.
