Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapy (OT) service aims to assist clients to minimise their risk of falls and enable them to live independently in their own home. Intervention may include any of the following:

  • Assessment of the clients ability to carry out activities of daily living (personal and domestic activities) independently
  • Rehabilitation and advice in personal, domestic and community activities
  • Prescription of wheelchairs and assessment for postural management
  • Education and advice on coping strategies for falls (including anxiety management)
  • Education and advice for carers
  • Advice on leisure pursuits
  • Comprehensive home assessment to establish:
    • Ability to manage safely at home
    • Need for adaptive equipment and home modification such as grab rails
    • Referral to appropriate community services.

Criteria for referral

  • People aged 65 years and older who have fallen, are at risk of falls or have fear of falling that restricts activities of daily living.
